A Visit to the Skunk Ape (Big Foot) Research Center

Yesterday I wrote about the smallest post office in America. About a mile down the road we just had to stop at The Skunk Ape Research Center. A Skunk Ape in Florida is a Big Foot in Ohio. By the way, I have a friend who was photographing a senior portrait and had an encounter with what seems to be a Big Foot. He (my friend, not Big Foot) was recently filmed explaining his adventure by Animal Planet TV Show. I understand the segment will be on TV in January. I’ll try to post the date and time when I find out.

We entered the gift shop which was full of the traditional South Florida trinkets like preserved baby alligator heads and sea shells tinted in colors that remind me of Easter eggs. We paid the fee to enter the larger room where all the exciting exhibits are displayed. There was quite a collection of snakes, alligators and birds. One of the gators was huge! I might be exaggerating a little, but I think he could swallow a Volkswagen!

Snakes give me the creeps so I didn’t linger in that area too long. As a matter of fact, one of the very few things I like about winter is that the snakes go away.

Probably my favorite of the exhibits were the birds. I made friends with one of the birds and had him trained in just a few minutes. He would squawk loudly until I held up my hand with the palm facing him, then he would stop.

I wonder if maybe he and some of his bird friends are chattering and laughing about how easily he trained a tourist…I can hear him cackling...”You won’t believe how easy it is to train a tourist. All I had to do was squawk a couple of times and I got him to hold up his hand. It worked every time!”

In all the excitement, I forgot to ask about the skunk ape. I guess if they’d had one I would have smelled it.
